Witnessing the Birth of a Supernova: Unveiling the Secrets of a Star's Explosive End
In a groundbreaking discovery, astronomers have captured the earliest moments of a star's explosive death, a supernova, in unprecedented detail. Using the powerful Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, scientists observed a star 15 times the mass of our sun, located in the galaxy NGC 3621, as it met its fiery end. This star's unique explosion shape, resembling an olive, challenges existing models and offers a new perspective on stellar evolution.
The star, named SN 2024ggi, was a red supergiant, approximately 25 million years old and 600 times the diameter of the sun at the time of its demise. Unlike the sun, which has billions of years left, massive stars like this one live fast and die young. When these stars exhaust their hydrogen fuel, their cores collapse, triggering a rapid outward blast of material through the stellar surface.
What sets this supernova apart is the star's pre-existing disk of gas and dust surrounding its equator. The explosion pushed material outward unevenly, resulting in a distinctive olive-like shape. This asymmetry indicates that the star's core collapse and subsequent explosion were not random but governed by a large-scale mechanism.
