I know that this probably isn't the right forum to post this on. But this is my first forum so please be gentle. But anyways I am stuck on this decision of dedicating 4gb of ram to minecraft or 2gb. I currently have dedicated 4gb to minecraft but that is only because I have been lagging recently on Hypixel Skyblock. And that would only happen when it's the beginning of the day, I wake up and play Skyblock, but when i first spawn in my island and then I turn around the game like freezes for like 1-2 seconds and then turns back into its normal state. So that is why I have allocated 4gb. But people have been saying that allocating more ram than enough, it will cause some sort of "lag spike". And I don't want that happening to me. So for playing Hypixel for like a long time, how much ram should I dedicate to minecraft?

Allocating too little (or too much) ram will decrease performance. Too little, and Minecraft will use all of your RAM in a couple of seconds, thus causing a "lag spike". Too much means that your RAM is converted to disk space until it is actually going to be used. Given that HDD and SSD aren't as fast as RAM at transferring data, this causes lag.
Personally, I play on Skyblock with a few mods (SB addons, mouse tweaks, optifine etc) that makes my experience more enjoyable. I allocate 4gb out of my 16g and it works fine. With just optifine, you should just be able to allocate 2 or 3gb.
TLDR: 3gb should be fine for normal use.

How much ram do you have on your computer? I have 16gb and I use 4gb ram to minecraft. Also, consider getting MemoryFix mod by Sk1er as it could fix lag spike problems in 1.8.9
